Has anyone had trouble with screen coming loose...

Has anyone had trouble with their Apple Watch series 1 sport Watch screen becoming loose?

Hi

Apple advises that you should not continue using a damaged Apple Watch.

Contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider to establish your available service options (whether under warranty, if eligible, or via chargeable repair service):

Yes, to my then 22m old Watch.

At the end of March 2017 I tapped the display and it felt strange. Tapped again and the same. Looked and saw that the adhesive holding the display had failed on top, right and bottom.

I called Apple and they replaced it under the 2 year European law warranty; sent me a return box, then sent me the replacement. At first the Apple guy seemed headed toward quoting an out of 1y factory warranty, no apple care, replacement price. But when I complained that this was unacceptable for a 650$ purchase (since I was a boy, I never lost a crystal, even on a cheap bang around watch) he flipped into "it's covered under warranty."

So despite my unhappiness with the failure and what seemed like a dodgy conversation ended well, I'm happy to have my watch back because I really like it.

To be honest, I'm super nervous about two things:

- adhesive failure again on the display or back cover in the next 2y (once bitten...) but Apple guy assured me it wouldn't happen again; I will hold Apple to its word;

- all the folks I convinced, ca a dozen, to buy these devices. If they start failing, I'm going to get flak and my reputation will be hurt.

I probably should have explicitly said my watch is a Series 0, 42mm AL Sport, bought in June 2015 (first week one could be found in Europe and I made a 4h round trip jaunt to pick it up.)

Mine had the same issue, only two months left on the Apple Care+.  It would have been $199, if I didn't have the Apple Care+ on it, that my wife insisted I buy.    I have the Series 1, 42mm Sport in Space Black.  I only wear it at work and when I get home, I take it off, so I won't damage it.

I guess the glue failed. I love the watch, but I think a $500 watch's crystal should stay on.  I have lots of (non-computer) watches, and this is the only one that had the crystal come off.  I now only have two remaining months of warranty, if it happens again.

Yes. and I finally found an inexpensive solution if watch is out of warranty.  I purchased an ICE FROG iWatch Series 1 42mm Case (comes in smaller size) for around $7.00.  It clamps down on the watch face and keeps it from popping off.  As you might know, the alternative is to pay the 199.00 for out of warranty replacement.

Yes, my research indicated that this is due to the battery swelling.  Apple replaced my watch for no charge (I opened a service claim, they sent me a pre-paid mailer, I returned it and got a new watch in about a week.) I believe they will honor this claim even if your watch is out of warranty because it is a manufacturing defect (battery swelling).  You do not want to use other methods of dealing with this problem because 1) the watch no longer is splash proof, 2) the battery could continue to swell causing more problems potentially overheating (remember the Samsung phone that caught fire?)

I did initially send my watch into Apple with the hope of the resolve that your suggested. Unfortunately my story did not end with Apple diagnosing the loose face plate as the battery.   A senior tech that was supporting my case also thought it was a swollen battery but when it was sent it, it was rejected for repair other than the option of paying the $199.00 fee for a replacement (a brand new Series 1 is $269.00).   I called every Mac repair center in San Diego, attempting to find a way to reseal the loose face plate with a better price estimate proportional to the value of the watch.  No one does this kind of work, so far.  I know that the ICE FROG is not a perfect solution but it does keep the loose face in place until Apple comes up with a way to possibly reseal the watch face without a price tag that is close the value of the watch.

Do you have the first Apple Watch version? If so I think that's why they would have you pay for a newer one because they may be out of the first version. I had the same thing happen to mine a few months ago and they sent me a new one but they still had the first apple sport version available.
