upgrading from Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (UK)

Hi.  I'm very embarrassed. I've abandoned my mac book pro and left it using it's original install. i had no other reason except being a past windows users who doesn't trust updates….  i fear now that was probably a bad move!

The machine is from 2011.  I often receive a notice on websites (previously used without issue) stating they no longer support my current version of safari or that my system is out of date. I have no idea what i should be upgrading to now, as there are so many and i am a simple users and not in least bit tech minded.

i know i need to update the operating system, which should automatically update my safari. When i try to install the latest version of El Capitan and Sierra I received a message stating it was not available in the UK Store yet.

I tried using the 'chat' option on the App Store and received the message that my version was too old to support the 'chat'!

I would be ever so grateful for any advice, please.
