iMac was possibly compromised

I got a call from a friend of mine, who is a senior citizen.  She has an iMac (El Capitan 10.11.6).  She said that she was having problems logging into her Gmail account online and was given a tech support number to call.  She called this number and of course they could fix it for her in the amount of $630.00.  She didn't know any better and thought that she was doing the right thing, so she allowed them to access her iMac.

I have researched this company and they are in fact a scam.  I called them and asked what exactly did they do to her iMac and I was told that they installed an IP Blocker and Network Firewall Protection. I checked her iMac to see if the Firewall was on and it was NOT turned on.  I immediately disconnected it from the internet.  She has her Time Machine back up on an external drive.  Would it be better to just restore the iMac to factory settings at this point? Thanks for your help!

Yes she has been scammed and if she paid via CC she needs to contact her CC company to reverse the charges.

She also should take the computer to  her local Apple Store or AASP to have the computer reformatted and restored with a Time Machine backup from a time before she called the "support" phone number.

Sorry for the troubles. What I would recommend you send her is the following information:

Phony "tech support" / "ransomware" popups and web pages
