MBP issues with Kensington 4600P

Hi everyone,

I've been experiencing some issues with my new setup at work. I have a week old MBP 2017 touch bar touch id, a kensington 4600P docking station, and a dell screen (see picture below). The idea is that I have a dual screen set up (MBP+dell), have some extra non USB-c inputs, while charging my MBP at the same time.

Issues summary:

- MBP screen freeze on connect with docking station

- MBP does not charge in docking station

- It seems to be one or the other: charging but frozen screen, or functional but not charging.

From the start on I experienced some difficulties between the different components. For one, if I connect the MBP with the dock while the laptop is open (so that the display and the keyboard are visible), my screens will freeze (and possibly my dell screen might even remain black), the charging however seems to work. I found out, that this can be overcome by first closing the MBP, plugging the USB-c cable in, then opening it again.

However, when I run my setup like this, my MBP does not recognise the external power source from my docking station and thus slowly drains my battery instead of charging. Obviously this is very inconvenient.

Now I figure I can solve this by buying another apple usb-c adapter, and have my laptop hooked up to both the dock and the adapter. However, this sort of beats the purpose of the setup. I wanted a nice functional setup, and not a system that has been glitching and buggy since day one.

What can I do to solve this?

So far i've tried the following checks and 'fixes':

- Reboot MBP: nothing much changed.

- I've checked all cables wether they are appropriately connected: they were/are.

- Unplugged power cable from dock to restart: nothing much changed

- Used a different kensington dock (from a co-worked): My MBP interacts normally, and charges while hooked up.

- Used a different MBP touch bar (from that same coworker) on my dock: No problem either.
