Symbol checkmark in iTunes

I do not understand the definition of the symbol black check mark in iTunes, Mac:  "The song will be included in the specified action. For example, only songs with a checkmark are imported when you import a CD." In my library on my Mac I have some that are checked and some that are not. First, how do I uncheck them all so that none are in a specified action?

Normally, you keep All songs checkmarked except those you want to exclude, for example:

1. Uncheck holiday-related songs so they can be excluded from a Smart Playlist for a certain music Genre;

2. Uncheck duplicate songs appearing on different albums (especially collections) so only one Copy is included in a Smart Playlist for a given Artist.

3. Uncheck some tracks that you never want to sync to your iDevices (say, very long tracks) so you can exclude them from syncing in iTunes device Summary page.

In these are examples, creating Smart Playlists and Syncing are the “actions” referred to in your quoted text.
