upgrading from Mac OS X 10.6.8

Good afternoon, 

What steps are required to upgrade an IMac from Mac OS X 10.6.8 to a more current OS?  At the present time only  Sierra is available in the App Store, so where would this dotard access old downloads?

The only way to get something between 10.6.8 and Sierra is if you  had already downloaded it in the past

Appreciate you!  Would you recommend taking it all the way to Sierra or is cool to let it sit on El Capitan for a while?
