Time Machine transfer to new MacBook Air
Hi, I am trying to assist my husband to migrate from MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 to a MacBook Air using Time Machine backup on a hard drive connected directly to the MacBook Air. I get to the page to select the Time Machine backup, tick all of the relevant boxes and there is 78.86GB selected with about 27.81GB available after transferring. So far so good. Next I get a message saying "There are some conflicts detected. Finish selecting the information you'd like to transfer and click continue to fix any conflicts" Conflict 1 of 2: "A user account named "...." already exists on this Mac. Do you want to replace user or keep both users?" I tick replace, then continue but nothing seems to happen. The continue button turns blue when pressed but then returns to the blue outlined box immediately. I hear some activity from the HD but nothing seems to change over the course of a couple of hours. I have tried doing it three times. My question is: how long should it take and how do I get to the next section (conflict 2)
I am hoping someone out there can shed some light on this for me. Thank you in anticipation.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with Time Machine. This is an extensive site with most everything you may need for using Time Machine. You will not find a better resource for Time Machine in one location. Due to the passing of James Pondini, the site is no longer being updated. Therefore, some of the information may be a little outdated.
Hi,
It may be that there's a glitch with TM. Try creating a new admin user account:
- Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
- Click , then enter an administrator name and password.
- Click the Add button below the list of users.
- Complete the fields shown for an Administrator account, then click Create Account (or OK).
Delete the old account which has the same name as the one you're trying to migrate from TM.
Restart.
Now try migrating from TM again.
Thank you for your advice. I have spent hours on this today with no luck. I have tried Migrating using a firewire cable but the main problem appears to be a conflict with the OS. The old MBP needs updating from 10.6.8 I have tried to update to El Capitan and when I check Software update I am told there is no update. I found a link on one of the support community pages but it will not activate, there is a button that says "get" but nothing happens. If I look at the same page on my iMac it will not allow me to download it because my computer is running Sierra. I thought I might be able to download it onto a HD and transfer it that way.

Why do you think that?
Exactly which MacBook Pro do you have? (so I know which OS you can upgrade to) https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201300
Hi tjk, it is a MacBook Pro 5,5 running 10.6.8 When I was attempting to migrate using a firewire cable I received an error message saying that the migration could not be completed because the software was not compatible with the newer MacBook Air. As I said I tried to update the older MBP to no avail. The MBA is a 2014 model I think. I had been using it in 2015 and have now done a factory reset.
Then you can upgrade to El Capitan: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206886
I cannot do that - as I said previously it won't download to the MBP. There is a "GET" button but nothing happens when I press it. Any ideas?
Please paste a link or screen shot of where the "get" button is.
Thanks again, sorry for the delay but I have only just managed to get access to the MNB, husband busy using it for work! Here is a screenshot:
Typo - should be MBP!
Just wanted to make sure you're in the right place. You are and it should work there....
Try booting into Safe Mode: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262, then repeating the process.
Thanks again for your help, I will have to wait until the end of next week because my husband is away on a business trip now with the computer. Hopefully nothing will go wrong with the MBP while he is gone! I will report back and let you know how I get on.
I am still no further advanced. There is no way that I can upgrade to El Capitan, I have tried booting in safe mode and still cannot get it. Any further advice would be welcome! This computer is on its last legs I fear and I cannot find a way to transfer the contents to a newer model. Please help!!
