Powerpoint sound suddenly playing only through ...

My previously working powerpoint presentations now only play sound through the headphones on my iPad Pro.  All other applications work just fine through the speakers and, more importantly, over HDMI or to my Apple TV which I use for presentations.  I've tried 1) checking the codec (Microsoft's only suggestion so far, which makes no sense as the video clips play fine on headphones), 2) removing and reinstalling Powerpoint 3) wiping my iPad and reinstalling everything 4) Removing Powerpoint, making a new backup, wiping and recovering everything but Powerpoint, then reinstalling Powerpoint manually.

 

I'm at my wits end with this one.  I know a few other people have had this problem over at the MS forums, but I've not seen a single solution.  Any ideas?

Be sure ringer volume is not zero (settings/sounds) and that do not disturb / silent mode (control centre) are not active. PowerPoint sees them as a mute switch,
