iTunes playlist playback issue

Why doesn't iTunes recognize checking and unchecking songs in playlist during playback? You have to stop playback and start again for any checked change to be recognized. So you can't pull a song out of a playlist during playback by unchecking it. iTunes will play it anyway even though it is unchecked.
