mail signature fixed

Hi folks,

this concerns macOS Sierra 10.12.6, Mail 10.3.  I have four signatures to choose from but strangely Mail is fixed on one particular only.  Changing the signature in preferences is of no avail - the message will again display the former signature.  The only way I can change the signature is via the drop-down menu while composing and before sending, but it will be back to the old one next time I write another email.  I'd like to be able for a chosen signature to remain fixed for the time period I wish.  Anyone an idea how to solve this?
