problem migrating time machine backup to new drive

i bought a new drive 'seagate 4 TB backup plus hub' to use with time machine.

i formatted it and copied the existing time machine backup of 940 GB from my recent 1 TB drive to the new drive according to the instructions in the related apple support document. this took more than 24h, despite both drives being USB 3.0 and being recognized as such according to my system's profile.

i assigned the new drive as new TM drive. at the time being, it has been writing a new, recent backup for more than 12h. it will be finished in a couple of hours, it says. it is writing into the correct location of the backup file structure of TM.

two things i worry about:

- opening TM, i can see my old backups (from the 1 TB drive) with correct date on the timeline and in the list, but i cannot access them.

- TM now makes a full backup of 404 GB (ie my whole system) rather than a backup of changes as it should, building on previous backups.

is this okay? do i just need to wait this out? or have i done anything wrong?

i still have the old TM backup, so i could still start over...

That sounds right. What TM is doing is expected behavior. If you choose to "inherit" the backup, Time Machine will do that but will also make a full first backup on the new disk.
