I hear static on my airpods when connected to my MacBook Air. It is running MacOs Sierra 10.12.14. You can hear the static even when no music is playing!

Do you have any other sound apps open?

Try moving the MBA and Airpods to another area as far away as possible to see if there's interference in the area you were in.

Try your Airpods on another Mac if possible to see if it's an Airpod issue.

Try resetting the SMC: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295.

Try resetting the NVRAM: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063.

If no luck, I'd probably bring them and your MBA to an Apple Store "genius" bar for diagnosis and possible replacement of your Airpods: https://support.apple.com/contact

Don't forget your receipt and packaging.

Apparently static in AirPods is a common hardware issue and a key reason AirPods production was severely limited. Please stop by your local Apple to have your pair exchanged.
