mac os Sierra, dictation and speech pain missin...
Hi, this is Stephen. I upgraded to mac os Sierra, and now, for some reason, dictation and speech is missing from system preferences. That's the preference pain I use to turn on enhanced dictation, which is a feature that allows use of dictation even when offline. I reported the issue/bug to apple and called Apple Care Technical support about it yesterday. Can anybody tell me why Apple removed dictation and speech from system preferences in mac os Sierra? Or was it just an accident? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
It was not removed. It's a tab in Keyboard preferences. And, there is more in Accessibility preferences.
Indeed it is, but I can't get it to work anyway. When I use the assigned hotkey, I get a "ping" but no dictation.
Make sure that Internal Microphone is selected in the "Dictation" tab
Dictation has bugs in Sierra. I have the proper settings in Sys Prefs via the new panes - but now it functions intermittently unless I open the Keyboard Dictation pane and leave it open!
I just discovered the control to activate it with a double tap on the Right Command Key in Preferences, 4th row down, next to the App Store icon.
It seems to work about 85% accuracy so far. No, on further testing, it is deleting stuff I had dictated .. 75% to 85% accuracy.
This is NOWHERE NEAR reliable enough for me to use without having a recording accurate memory of how I have phrased something when I got to do the inevitable "Corrections" on the sometimes NON-SENSICAL Text!
Bugger .. Looks like I HAVE to buy Dragon Dictate! Pity!
Pretty useless really!
I am about to dictate what I just wrote .. you compare!
I just discovered the control activated with a double tap on the white command key in preferences, for slow down me to the App Store icon. It seems to work about 85% accuracy so far, I'm further testing is still deleting stuff I dictated.. 75% to 85% accuracy. This is nowhere near reliable enough to me to use they're having a recording accurate memory and how I try something when I had to do the with the inevitable corrections on this sometimes nonsensical text. Bugger.. Also have to buy DragonDictate! Pity! Pretty useless really!
Are you using the "online" or "Enhanced" setting? any difference with the other setting? Did you do train it to your voice?
Adjust Text to Speech Speed
macOS Sierra
Select: System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech > Speaking Rate
Enable Dictation
macOS Sierra
Select: System Preferences > Keyboard > On > Use Enhanced Dictation
