Mid 2014 macbook pro keep shutting down after A...

Hi, my macbook pro mid 2014 retina shuts down unexpectedly more & more often. It started a few month ago while i was using it a lot to finish a 3D project.

First thing I did was to reinstall Os X (and delete everything on my computer).

Then i restarted SMC memory maybe Nvram also (I'm not sure anymore)

Then I brought it to the apple store and they gave it back to me saying its should be fine (they clean it also some other software stuff & the hardware test was fine).

The next day he shutsdown again unexpectedly. Consequently as I was told at the genius bar I reformat again and reinstall os X it again.

I bring it to another certified apple repair center. They "repair it" and gave it back to me saying "this time it's gonna work fine" and still right after the problem still exist and the macbook is still shutting down.

I recently installed Mac Os X Sierra hoping for the update to fix the problem, it didn't.

I recently installed bootcamp and discover that on windows the macbook pro never shuts down unexpectedly.

Today it's nearly unusable on Os X so i use my macbook pro as a Pc (which is highly problematic for me but better than no computer).

Please does somone knows what should I do next ?

Hi, Here is my console error panel just after my macbook pro shuts down, if someone has any idea where the shutdowns could come from ?

I have exactly the same MacBook Pro (mid 2014) with two video cards (Intel Iris Pro Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M).

In my case, the problem started when I was using Microsoft Ward (but, in the case of the problem, what I was doing when the problem started is irrelevant).

Doing some research online I am 99.9% sure the problem in my case is related to what Video Card is being used.

I did all the possible things:

- Resetting SMC, NVRAM.

- Completely reinstalling MAC OS after (reformatting SSD) to the same OS that the system initially shipped with (Yosemite). After the reinstall, the system was still freezing and shutting down in Yosemite.

- With many tries, I was able to update the OS to the latest stable OSX Sierra 10.12.1, but the system was still freezing and crashing (almost immediately after login). Remember, nothing is installed, but fresh OSX. I am now on the latest OSX Sierra 10.12.2 Beta 6 (released 12/8/16).

- After many tries as with the upgrade to OSX Sierra, I was able to create and install Boot Camp running Windows 10 64bit (Boot Camp OS Version is irrelevant in this situation). The MacBook Pro runs without any problem in the BootCamp Windows 10. The reason is: only NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M is used in Windows. There is no Dynamic Cars switching happening. Yes, the system runs hotter and battery drains faster.

Doing further research I found gfxCardStatus (utility that you can run in OSX to tell the system what card to use fulltime. When I force NVIDIA card to fulltime, I can use the Mac in OSX for some time without freezing and crashing (in my case when system is frozen, it will shutdown 100% of the time).

Even with the gfxCardStatus at some point the Mac will freeze and shutdown. I don’t know if the gfxCardStatus tool is not able to keep Nvidia card enabled full time in OSX…

You can apparently achieve the same in Power Settings in OSX, but for me, it did not work with the option. The gfxCardStatus was the only thing that helped me to run in OSX with longer periods between the crashes (10 min +/- vs. 30 sec – 1 min +/-).

Also, I don’t see any kernel panic reports.

I also checked for dust in the cooling ducts to make sure the system is not overheating. I took the back cover off and everything is clean.

I even purchased expansive Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, took the cooling element out, cleaned the processer, integrated GPU and NVIDIA GPU from the old thermal paste and re-applied the new one to eliminate possibility of overheating related to the clogged cooling element and/or old (evaporated) thermal paste.

I am in contact with Apple, but it takes them very long time to get back to me…

I can see a lot of the same problem where people had Logic Board replaced and the problem will still be there.

So, my question unlike yours "Please does someone knows what should I do next?"

Is : Please, does someone FOM APPLE knows what should I do FIRST! (hardware replacement related), so I don't waist more time and money replacing every part in the laptop.?

Thank you.

I im in the same situation with the same machine.

I tried everything and the last thing was to renew the thermal paste. Btw. the original paste wasn't in a good condition. I took arctic silver No. 5.

This I have done before about two hours.

I did a stress test with 5k videos and

yes> /dev/null & yes> /dev/null & yes> /dev/null & yes> /dev/null

twice in the terminal to have 100% CPU Load on every cpu kernel.

I looked to the temperatures when idle, when stressing and stop stressing.

The temperature when idle is a little higher than before, but goes not as high as before and not as fast high than before.

Before the change of the thermal paste, in this stress situation, my macbook would have had at least 10 times a sudden shut down.

You can force the shutdown by running 4k videos in chrome!

In fact, I had exactly one, in this idle situation, I wrote this (I had to restart and rewrite).

So the problem is not fixed, but is much better than before.

So the problem has something to do with heat, this is for sure.

Connect the MacBook Pro Mid 2014 to a external display via HDMI or plug in a HDMI dummy plug (amazon) prevents it to shut down.
