MBP mid 2014 constantly shuts down also in safe...

I have been troubleshooting this for some time.

My macbook pro mid 2014 retina goes black completely randomly, stays lit for a few seconds, then kills.  It used to happen rarely, now it happens so often I can't work on it.  This is what i have tried:

Unplug all devices. with or without power cord, still crashes.

SMC, PRAM, Full hard disk erase and sierra reinstall.  Shut downs still occur even after fresh install.

Hardware check returns no problems, still fearing thermal issues, I had apple replace fans and clean out insides.  Still occurs.

Running in safe mode, it still crashed, although it took much longer.

Could there be some lingering software issues, even after fresh install and in safemode, that could cause this?

Or is this definitely hardware? Even if apple tells me everything looks good.

Could a faulty external drive cause this?

I have wasted a lot of time trying to fix this, any help anyone can offer is much appreciated!

If you can keep your Mac running for a few minutes, please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

Hi,

If you're trying to rule out software as a cause, then you need to backup (preferably twice), boot into Recovery or Internet Recovery, erase the HD in Disk Utility (if it asks, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID), quit DU and install an OS. Do not restore any data at all. Finish install and still do not restore any data or apps, andtry running MBP to see if issue continues; if so, it's a hardware issue. If not, the issue is solved, and you can restore your data manually; I would not use Migration assistant as this could reintroduce the same issue. I would then reinstall your apps, one at a time, from their source. After one install, check to see if the issue returns, and if it does, you know that app is causing the issue.

Personally, I think it's a hardware issue, possibly the GPU or logic board; no one, not even Apple, can find every hardware issue.

Here are the results from that.  It shut down 5 times before I managed to post it, safe mode gives me more time.

Thanks,

I did have a shutdown before I even managed to get any software on.  Skype seems to be raising a red flag.  Also I am suspicious of the Adobe Creative Cloud.  I feel like it could be software, because of how much longer it lasts in Safemode.  But with hardly any software on it besides the 2 mentioned above, I feel like some other malware from its past life made it through the hard drive erase.   Possible?

If it is logic board, or hardware, am I looking at a new computer ?  I saw something in other research people with a similar problem blamed it on the lack / or wearing out of a thermal paste that needed to be reapplied.  A seemingly easy fix, but I do not feel confident opening anything up myself.

Yes, something could have made it through the erase if you used Migration Assistant or a clone or Time Machine to restore everything from. If you're concerned about that, I'd at least try running Malwarebytes: https://www.malwarebytes.com/

If logic board, quite expensive; get quote from Apple Store "genius" bar for free: https://support.apple.com/contact For a machine that new, you may find it worthwhile to get it fixed (last post I saw on something like this was about $800). You could also look into a logic board from ifixit.com or powerbookmedic.com with directions on how to do it, but it doesn't sound like you'd want to do it yourself, as it is a very difficult task. You might also be able to bring a logic board to a repair shop and have them install it.

AFA thermal paste, that's a possibility, but no, it's not easy. Before going down that route, download a temperature and fan monitoring app which will give us some insight into whether or not there are heat related issues. Post back.

I didn't use any migration, or time machine, it was a completely clean start.  So no software can get by a hard drive erase?

I will check the thermal theory more, any suggestions on a good app for monitoring that?

Thanks!

Not unless you installed previous data after the erase/install.

Temp and fan monitoring apps

Temperature monitoring apps:

https://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html ($9.50)

check a whole list of them: https://www.tomsguide.com/forum/all.html?refine=temperature+monitoring+free+app

or google for more

Fan monitoring app:

smcFanControl (only if you can control the urge to control the fan speed; Mac OS X/macOS is designed to do this properly without outside interference):

https://www.eidac.de/?cat=40

or google for more

Fan and Temperature monitoring apps:

or google for more

Do any of these numbers look high to anyone?

I had a series of 5 shutdowns in a row, I went through the graphs of all of the stats to see if anything spiked before the shutdown.  I didn't find anything particularly suspicious, but I am not so sure of what to look for.

All of the graphs for these temperatures, make it seem like they are maxed out.  See below.

Graph with block areas showing shutdowns ::  Reboot seems  to take most CPU, but initial crash in series was high.

Here are some temperature readings that seem to show it maxed out ::

Anything specific I should check?

To my eyes, all the temps (F) look good, as do fan speeds. I don't know about the V (volts?) and A (amps?).

An update.

I did have the machine cleaned out and the CPU / GPU thermal paste replaced.

It went well for a couple days then it started happening again.

I have been all over the internet.  There are tons of people with this machine, MBP mid 2014 Retina,

who once they installed Sierra, this started happening.

The only fix I have found on all of these, is installing windows... on your Mac. Not something I am prepared to do.  Some found an external screen to help too, but unfortunately... that negates the whole portable computer thing.

If anyone has any other insight.  Please share!!

If it was the thermal paste, as it did for a short while, it should have fixed the issue. But it doesn't make sense that it only lasted a few days unless the job wasn't done properly. I doubt this is the issue.

If it's Sierra, it shouldn't have been fixed for any amount of time no matter the thermal paste replacement.

Given your research, if it really is Sierra, why not revert back to your previous OS?

Looking back at your OP, what does an external HD have to do with this situation?

I im in the same situation with the same machine.

I tried everything and the last thing was to renew the thermal paste. Btw. the original paste wasn't in a good condition. I took arctic silver No. 5.

This I have done before about two hours.

I did a stress test with 5k videos and

yes> /dev/null & yes> /dev/null & yes> /dev/null & yes> /dev/null

twice in the terminal to have 100% CPU Load on every cpu kernel.

I looked to the temperatures when idle, when stressing and stop stressing.

The temperature when idle is a little higher than before, but goes not as high as before and not as fast high than before.

Before the change of the thermal paste, in this stress situation, my macbook would have had at least 10 times a sudden shut down.

You can force the shutdown by running 4k videos in chrome!

In fact, I had exactly one, in this idle situation, I wrote this (I had to restart and rewrite).

So the problem is not fixed, but is much better than before.

So the problem has something to do with heat, this is for sure.

If you're in the exact same situation as the OP, interesting.
