I receive mail just fine. Can't send anything

Hi,

This article: https://support.apple.com/kb/TS3234 provides general tips that will resolve most send mail issues.

Many Internet Service Providers will only allow a device to use their outgoing server, if its connecting to the Internet over their network. So, the iPad may need to join the same Wi-Fi network as your home computer to send like it does.

I have this problem also despite re-setting up all my email accounts. I simply cannot send emails.

I have tried all of the options except completely resetting my iPad

I had the same issue with my new iPad and tried all suggested ideas. I have about ten Email addresses I am using, then I remembered that I had the same issue when I got my iPod. The solution is really different for everyone, but this is what worked for me. All of the accounts I could not get to send out were related to my comcast accounts. After dealing with Apple, they referred me to Comcast. Once I called them and explained the problem, that was what fixed it. Go to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/Name of Account you cannot send from/Outgoing Mail Server/Click on Primary Server/Server Port. While on the phone we tried 587, 110, and finally 25 worked. When I got my iPad, I had the same issue, so after hours of no success, remembered this, and changed it to port 25. All outgoing messages sent immediately! So, if you have comcast, this will work. If you have another carrier, contact them, and they should be able to help.

I have performed a test, switching between Wifi and 3G. Here are my results

POP incoming port is 110
POP smtp port is 587

Wifi - success both sending and receiving
3G - receive email fine
- sending - 'Recipient rejected by server'

Therefore it must be my carrier who is rejecting the smtp request before it gets to my isp's smtp server.

I will be calling my carrier tomorrow...

My iPhone mail works fine sending and receiving. My iPad won't send mail. I ger the "server rejects" message. Any ideas why?

If you are using your iPad on 3G or a Wifi network that isn't your home one then it may well be you need to set up an SMTP server for the network you are connecting to.

See my post in Mail forum on 'How to Send Email with 3rd Party POP account'

It is my home wifi network.

i too have same problem can receive but not send email have talked to apple, bell canada with no resolution yet the only thing i see that is not working properly is in outgoing mail server the ipad even though i set authentication to password it will not hold this preference and keeps reverting back to MD5 Challenge-Response I have tried all other fixes and I beleive the issue lies in this authentication issue therefore Apple not ISP problem

Same problem here. My WiPad won't send. My iPhone with exact same settings will.

I too cannot send any emails from my pop3 account. I have checked all the settings against my iMac mail and they are the same on the iPad. I am using wifi into my home network. I can receive all emails but get the following error message "cannot send mail. The sender address was invalid". I have tried all the suggested tricks on the apple support pages.

I set up a trial MobileMe account and can send and receive perfectly with that email address (which is not the one I want to use).

Any help appreciated.

The configuration and use of any outgoing server address (SMTP) may not be supported due to several factors including, but not limited to, the inability for the outgoing server (SMTP) to authenticate users (whether by IP or username/password) that are not directly connected to that Internet Service Providers(ISPs) network.

This is usually your HOME wi-fi and you are not connected to it because you are on your iPad away from the house. This is mainly done to prevent unsolicited users from sending SPAM via the ISP's servers.

If you are interested you can obtain that information directly from the email provider. This article has a great temple that you can use to ask all necessary information from the provider including "If you use your ISP’s own email service (instead of a third-party such as Gmail), sometimes it may not work if you use another Internet access point, such as a cafe with wireless Internet. Ask your email provider if the settings they give you will work on other networks."

What to ask if you're having issues sending, receiving, or configuring Mail

I have called Apple and Road Runner. My settings are the same as my iphone but cannot send.

The only solution so far is to go from wireless to 3g. Then it will work. Frustrated.

Our email provider changed the settings on their mail server without letting us know. They now require 'password authentication'. Just needed to update these settings.

Settings > Mail, Contacts & Calendars > (select account) > Advanced (scroll down).

SSL: unchecked
Authentication : password
Port: 110

Interesting to read all your posts, as I too have had this issue with my BRAND NEW Wi Fi 3G 64 GB ipad. Everything worked perfectly well with wireless at home, then we left for a trip interstate. First night I tried to send three emails and received the message that the server had rejected one of the recipients and the messages had been placed into the out box. Most annoying, as the out box is not accessible. I phoned apple and, after much discussion, it was suggested I call my ISP (BigPond). Another lengthy discussion and it was noted that there were no messages in my out box on the server, therefore the issue was with the ipad. I downloaded gmail and was able to receive and send emails using that program. Was also able to access my emails via Big Pond's web mail. It was just the mail program on the ipad that continuously looped back to the same error message. I deleted the account and decided to ask for a refund on the ipad. Back home, I have reinstalled mail to my Big Pond account and all seems to be working well. Am not sure what to do next, as I will be very disappointed if this keeps happening. The ipad is an expensive investment and I want to be able to use it to its fullest extent. Otherwise, I love apple products and am a apple user of more than two decades.
Good luck all.
