What cable to I need to purchase to download al...

Hi - I have a 2011 iMac and am going to purchase a 2017 iMac. Knowing little about these things, what cable do I need to connect the two iMac's to each other to transfer all my data. Thank you

This might help:

Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

You can use Thunderbolt, Firewire or Ethernet.... Ethernet probably best as otherwise you'll need an adapter at one end (for USB-C) and they're not cheap.

Thank you Duchy - I take it that both the mac's I mentioned have an ethernet connection?

Sorry if I appear dim but I'm completely a technophobe.

Thank you for replying so fast.

I just upgraded from a 2103 iMac to a 2017 one, and they both have ethernet slots. Am pretty sure your 2011 will too.... it's the one that looks like a telephone jack and it's been around for years. Just checked, it does. It may also have Firewire but if you use that you'll need an adapter to plug one end into the 2017 "Thunderbolt 3 / USV-C" slot, and they are expensive. However if you have accessories like external hard drives you may need an adapter anyway.
