Trying to reset my iMac for selling

I have a 2011 21.5 Imac to sell. I tried to erase all my data using Disc Utility. I read that it was better to increase the level of erasing to protect my passwords. I used Command - R. I used the slider available to increase from low to high. This seems to have deleted everything from the iMac. The restore button is not active any more. If I turn the iMac off and on again it just goes to the Apple logo and stays there. I have left it for hours and nothing changed.

I tried rebooting using Time Machine but although all my data and programmes came back the erase/restore buttons in Disc Utility are not active. MacHD is no longer available it is now only showing OX... I also tried to reboot online but Apple is saying it is not available via the Apple Store.

There was no disc with the computer when I bought it. I have a Snow Leopard disc but when I put that in the iMac said it was not suitable.

Can anyone help? I have no idea what to do next. Thank you Penolva
