encrypted iPhone backup on iTunes

Hi All,

My phone smashed and I backed my iPhone up before going to get a new one. The mistake I made at that point was to also try and update my smashed phone to the new IOS after I backed up (Pointless I know). This update originally failed requiring that I restored my phone and lost its current content.

When I done the backup never noticed that my back up encryption was selected as on, I don't recall ever setting this as on but thats another story.

Basically all my old back ups aren't encrypted, just my most recent and most important one. My contacts and apps etc have changed a lot between backups due to changing jobs etc so my old backups are pretty much useless.

I entered a password (eventually) that allowed me to turn off future encryptions but that same password doesn't work to unlock my recent back up? Surely that password should have been the same since I haven't changed anything?

This seems to be causing a lot of issues with users and I know people will say the same old "you must have set a password" "you need to remember your passwords" etc but I can assure you all that I keep good track of my passwords and have still been caught out here somehow. Yes its likely my mistake somehow but I don't understand how this happened.

Any ideas apart from aimlessly guessing passwords?
