Macbook Pro 17" External Display Resolution Issue

Hi,

I use a 17" Macbook Pro (Mid 2010) for work. I recently tried to plug it into my Dell U2711 display (2560x1440), it initially displayed a very glitchy image for about 10 seconds, so I unplugged it, plugged it back in, and this time it came up at 1080P resolution. Display settings show this as maximum resolution for the display (even with the option key held down to show all available resolutions). I've tried SwitchResX, and all manner of restarting with the display plugged in, not plugged in, not turned on, etc, to no avail.

I believe it can't be a display or cable issue, as the same display and cable (generic mini displayport to displayport) displays full resolution perfectly when used with a first-generation Retina MBP (mid 2012).

The specs for the 17" MBP show it is capable of supporting a maximum external resolution of 2560x1600, so it should be able to drive it... Running OX 10.9.5, and would rather not update if not absolutely necessary - the computer functions perfectly in every other way!

Any ideas?!

Thanks in advance.

Jack.
