Is a new OS good for an old Mac?

I want to completely zero out the drive on my laptop and start with fresh, new everything.  In the process, I'd also like to update the most current OS.

I've got a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010), and the recommendations re installing Sierra just barely having me squeaking in the door, due to the age of this thing.  Even then, it says I'll be missing certain functionality.

So if I'm not a perfect candidate for Sierra, how do I know which is the most recent OS that is right for me?

And is there even a way to go to a certain OS, but no later?  I assume I'll be digging out my old install discs and then updating, but I don't recall updating ever giving me an option as to how far along exactly to update.  It's usually just whatever's newest, right?

Unless you need to run some old software that requires an older OS, you should always install and run the newest OS that your Mac officially supports. In your Mac's case that is Sierra, the current version.

Your computer is a 2010 model. Since it's currently on Snow Leopard, you'll need to install El Capitan or another intermediate OS version first.

Unless you create an installation thumbdrive, you won't be able to both upgrade and zero the drive in one step.

How much Ram do you have installed? 4 GB is adequate, but more is better with the newer OSs. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times and a hard drive from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I had 6GB installed on an early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
