Many apps no longer working..

Dear Apple,

As the master of user experience, I understand that you are constantly looking out for my interests and ensuring that I will have a pleasurable experience with your devices.   I have been a long time supporter of your products and services having owned the first generation iPhone and iPad.    Over the years I have spent countless dollars buying applications for these devices.  How then can it be that there was no clear warning that upgrading to iOS 11 would invalidate nearly 100 applications on my device?   It seems like it should be my choice to decide if the loss of such applications is worth the value of UX you claim to bring to the device.

These applications are no longer available on your App Store because of you tight controls and costs.   These developers have moved on.   However, that does not diminish the utility  these applications.

Why was there not a clear indicaction of exactly what I would lose in the upgrade process? How can I go back to the previous state where I can use the applications that I spent my hard earned money on?

Unfortunately, Apple is not listening here in these user-to-user forums. You can tell them how you feel here:

Developers were given notice

"Starting in January 2018, all new apps submitted to the Mac App Store must support 64-bit. From June 2018, the same requirement applies to new apps and updates. This marks the start of a transition where in a few years, 32-bit Mac apps will no longer be supported and won’t run."

If you have older devices you can still use those iPads and the older (32-bit) apps, see note from MichelPM

iPad model A1416 says IOS up to date. How can I update to IOS 11.?

All of the apps that I use that needed to be updated to 64-bit have opened with warnings in iOS 10 all along stating something along the lines of this app needs to be updated or it may not function with future iOS releases.  I must have seen that app-opening warning hundreds of times with iOS 10.  Did none of your apps give you that warning?

Also all during the period of iOS 10, I was getting constant updates to apps for months, all of which included in their notes that they were being updated for iOS 11 compatibility.

There are over 2 million apps for sale in the App Store - Apple does not check any of them.  That is up to their individual developers and owners to deal with making sure their apps are compatible with iOS.

Sure.. a cagey vague and unspecific “may not work” message is not the same as saying, ”this upgrade will be the one that Makes your apps not work”...  here is what you will be losing.

If only I was a developer of iPhone apps I would know the specifics.

But Apple cannot tell you it will not work.  If the developer updates the app, it will continue to work.  If the developer does not update their product, then it won't work.  Hence the warning by iOS that it may not work.  Apple has nothing to do with whether it gets updated or not - they don't own nor control 3rd party apps nor the individuals or companies that own them.

Many of my apps that produced the warning did indeed get updated, and continue to work just fine in iOS 11.  Some did not get updated, and do not work in iOS 11.  If they were valuable to me, I went out and found alternatives.  Some that were not updated before iOS 11 was released to the public have since been updated, and now do work under iOS 11.

Again, how is Apple to know what a developer chooses to do or not do with their own intellectual property?  Apple releases the beta iOS 11 for developers to have so they can update their code and products.  But Apple cannot force them to.

As has been stated, you are not addressing any cognizant Apple employees in these support communities.

These communities are user to user supported.

We are all users here, just like you.

Actually, older apps on your iPad, for, at least, the last six months, have been putting up pop-up notices on your iPad every time you launch an older 32-bit app that without an update from these older 32-bit app developers, those apps will no longer function under the new iOS 11.

Nothing “cagey” about that!

These warnings started popping up around the time of iOS 10.3.2 or 10.3.3.

So, you have had six months to check for updates or equivalent replacement apps to all of those older apps on your iPad.

Did you know ANYTHING about the upcoming iOS 11 or are you just accustomed to blindly update to a brand new, MAJOR iOS upgrade before doing any research or due diligence on your part?

Doing research on a new operating system for ANY computer or mobile computing device should always be a good idea to do first before considering installing such a OS upgrade/update on such devices!

All of the features and consequences of installing and running iOS 11 have been widely publicised since this past April.

In addition, Apple has NEVER supported nor has any procedures or provisions to downgrade/revert back to any previous iOS versions.

All of what you encountered in iOS 11 has been widely known for quite some time.

Sorry and Good Luck to You.

No one here that has responded to you are developers here, either and yet we all knew what would happen if we installed iOS 11 on our iDevices.

I am in the same boat as you with quite a few dozen apps that have NOT been updates in quite some time.

So, I chose NOT to upgrade to iOS 11 for the foreseeable future.

You failed to do any research about this up and coming iOS 11 and what all of the app warnings really meant and the potential pitfalls/consequences of upgrading your iDevices.

Apple is not to blame here.

They have zero control over what older app developers do or not do with their software apps!

The burden of getting your iDevices ready for iOS 11, OR NOT, was entirely up to you!

That is not helpful. You are just making him feel bad for upgrading to iOS 11 in the first place! It was his choice and YOU  has nothing to do with it!

And who are you?

This is NOT a social media website.

Do you have a question about your Apple Product that is of a technical support nature, or not!

If not, you shouldn't even be posting anything here.

YOU! I own a technology company! Don't talk like that!
