I have been unable to use iMessage for months.  Not able to login using AppleID?  Changed to ID with @me.com and was immediately successful.  FYI?

Can you elaborate on this?  I'm not clear on what your stating or questioning due to your punctuation, and i'd really like to understand what you're saying because i think i'm having the same issue.  I cannot log into iMessages or Facetime, no matter what i try (factory resets, changed Apple ID).  Tech support has been no help at all.  Are you saying here that you changed your apple ID to something that ended in something other than "@iCloud.com" and got it to work?
