Apple Watch thinks I stood up, but I didn't. Why?
Yesterday my wife and I did a road trip from our home in Northeast Thailand to the beach at Cha Am. This was a seven hour trip including a few pit stops for coffee, toilet and lunch. She drives, so I basically sat on my butt for seven hours. In spite of this my watch gave me hourly congratulations on having stood up recently. Before the trip ended the watch announced that I'd reached my calorie goal for the day.
Thus is either a genuine miracle or an example of horrible engineering.
Is there any way to fix this?
Hi
For the purpose of crediting the hourly Stand achievement, your Apple Watch aims to identify when you have stood up and moved around for at least one minute during that hour.
Apple Watch uses an accelerometer to identify movement, so arm movement equivalent to changing from a seated to a standing position followed by a minute's walk around with the arm on which you are wearing your Apple Watch swinging naturally should help to register this.
If your activity is being misinterpreted by your Apple Watch, then it may help to calibrate it, including resetting any existing calibration data (doing so will not erase your Activity history):
Activity-related estimations also depend, in part, on your personal information. To check that this is accurate and to update it over time:
- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

The watch is new and I had just calibrated it with the 20 minute walk a few days before the incident described. The personal data is up-to-date.
A few days later I had another weird incident. I had been on a dive boat for a few days. After the last day of the last dive I spent about 20 minutes getting our gear together. This involved walking back and forth between the dive deck and our cabin and going up and down stairs between decks. When I was done I sat down next to my wife to relax. A few minutes later the watch told me it was time to stand up. I ignored it. But, that hour, which included 20 minutes of moderate but sustained activity, is now shown as an idle hour.
Driving home from the dive boat involved two days of sitting in the car. Four hours one day and six hours the next. Both of those car days show 16/12 hours as being "Hours Stood" even though I was seat belted in to the passenger seat for a total of ten hours those days.
Evidently, scratching your ear and checking your phone while seated in the car counts as "standing", but twenty minutes running around a boat does not.
I remain confused.
Be sure to calibrate your Apple Watch for at least 20 minutes at each of the different speeds at which you typically walk, jog and/or run:
Whilst getting your gear together on the dive boat (which may have involved carrying things), it is possible that the arm on which you were wearing your Apple Watch was not moving (ie swinging naturally) in a manner that the Activity app would interpret as meeting the requirement for Stand credit.
Keep in mind also that Apple Watch cannot recognise or track flights of stairs that you have climbed.
It is certainly possible that your arm movements whilst seated in a car may have been misinterpreted.
If the issue persists after recalibrating your Apple Watch (including resetting existing data) and you are concerned about a possible hardware defect, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:
