How to delete purgeable storage on mac?
Hello everyone,
How do I delete purgeable storage on my HDD? I am trying to bootcamp my mac but I don't have enough free space (at least 50GB needed) and I have 45GB. However, my purgeable files are over 70GB, and I really want to delete them. I don't that they are, and what files are taking 70GB. I turned off my iCloud Drive, and Optimize Storage but purgeable is still there.
Please help.
Thanks.
Hello GalacticKat,
Thanks for asking about the space available on your HDD here in the Apple Support Communities.
After review of two help articles, I discovered that there are different options that you set up to save space on your hard drive that effect how the purgeable space will be utilized. Please review these articles:
1. What is ‘Other‘ and ‘Purgeable‘ in About This Mac?
2. Free up storage space on your Mac
Once you delete the purgeable items which can be downloaded again if you wish, you will have plenty of space to complete the BootCamp installation.
Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
Those articles do not explain how to purge the purgeable storage. I have the same problem. I already emptied my trash, optimized my storage and reduced the clutter and now I have even more purgeable files (15 GB instead of 14). How can I get rid of them?
Those two points that you mentioned DO NOT explain how to remove the purgeable storage. If you think I am missing something please share in greater detail.
The two points you've mentioned are useless I have 53GB of purgeable space doesn't seem to go to any where even when I used the Cleanmymac3 .
Have you tried this:
Go to the iCloud pane. Click on the Options button for iCloud Drive. Uncheck Optimize Mac Storage. Reboot, and you should have your Purgeable space freed up.
Oh, and please, immediately uninstall CleanmyMac - it will likely cause problems to your system. Check their website and follow their uninstall instructions. Cleaning apps are not needed on Macs.
Your instructions did not work for my MacBook Air.
In Sierra “Purgeable” content appears when you've turned on Optimize Mac Storage. It's storage space that your Mac can automatically make available when storage space is needed. Files marked as purgeable can always be downloaded again on demand. On my machine this is photos and videos in the Photos app. I have my iCloud Photo Backup set as optimised so this info can be deleted without causing me problems in the future.
Hey there y'all,
To make it more easily accessible, here is your answer:
In macOS Sierra, “Purgeable” content appears when you've turned on Optimize Mac Storage. It's storage space that your Mac can automatically make available when storage space is needed. Files marked as purgeable can always be downloaded again on demand. What this means is that these aren't files that you will actually delete, but rather be aware of. In the case that you need more storage on your Mac, your Mac will automagically (see what I did there?) free up the space need... in theory.
