iPad charging for a second and turns itself off

Our iPad (2nd Gen) won't charge today. We plug it in and the apple logo comes on. It stays on a few seconds and turns off again. A few seconds later the apple logo appears again, and so on.

I can't connect to iTunes because iTunes requires a passcode that I can't enter.

I've tried changing the chargers and even the plug sockets.

Another forum suggested holding the home button and power button down when the apple logo appears and repeat for 10/15 minutes. That hasn't worked.

Anyone any ideas?
