iTunes info box missing artwork thumbnails

I have spent a lot of time adding artwork to my iTunes library. When the info box for a song is opened it usually shows a thumbnail of the cover art in the upper left corner of the box. Suddenly on certain files this thumbnail is missing entirely. There isn't even the pink and blue note icon where it should be. Sometimes if I have the original CD I can re-import the file and get the thumbnail back, but other times even this doesn't work. The larger image of the artwork still appears under the artwork tab, but I also like having the thumbnail which can be seen on all the tabs. I am using Windows 7, iTunes 12.5.1.21 (yes, I know there is a newer version, but it seems like every time I download the latest some new problem crops up).

Figured it out! This only happens if I use TIFF files for the artwork. Once I convert the TIFF to a jpeg or png, all is well again. It probably only seemed to happen "suddenly"-I'll bet I just didn't notice at first.
