Macbook Pro Freezes without external display

When I unplug the external display cable of the Macbook Pro I have about 5 seconds before the whole system freezes.  It wont freeze if I keep moving the mouse or touching the trackpad or keep typing. As soon as I stop with all of that It just freezes and the only thing I can do is to force a power off by holding the power button for several seconds.

The only way I found to start the system is by closing the lid just after pressing the power button having the external display and the AC cable plugged. 

The system starts correctly in safe mode and the machine doesn't freezes.

I've tried several things without success fixing the issue.

• Erase disk and reinstall OS X.
• Upgrade to latest OS X ( Sierra 10.12.6 ).
• Reset NRAM.
• Reset SMC.
• Using different displays and cables.
• Run disc first aids.
• Set all display and color settings.

It is a Macbook Pro Retina 13'' mid 2014 , intel core 15 2.6 , 8gb ram

You sound like a pro, and have already tried everything I could think of off the top of my head.

The only other thing I can think of is Apple Diagnostics. You can run this test to verify the hardware (which, after reinstalling macOS over again and seeing the same issue, is more than likely). Find instructions here: support.apple.com/en-ca/HT202731/

The result of the report was 'No issue found' .

If this is still a problem … I've got another idea.

Since you said the computer works properly in Safe Mode, I looked up Apple's support document on Safe Mode (Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support), which lists what Safe Mode disables. It also links to this other support document which discusses incompatible login items, which are among the things disabled in Safe Mode (macOS Sierra: If you think you have incompatible login items). Maybe that will help you figure out what's going on.
