Backup and Restore

Hi All,

I have had my Macbook Pro for about 5 years now, and after a recent repair scare, decided to buy an external hard drive. I know that you can use the time machine feature to restore your Mac in the event of a catastrophe, but I was hoping to use this as an opportunity to freshen up my computer. I was wondering if there was a way that I could move my desired files to an external had drive, reset my Mac from home, move my files back onto my newly refreshed computer, and then use the external HD as a time machine/backup device. Anyone done anything like this from home and have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Here's one option:

  1. Use Time Machine to create a "current" backup.
  2. Verify your Time Machine backups. Note: Be sure to perform this step BEFORE going on to the next step.
  3. Use Recovery Mode to reinstall a "fresh" copy of OS X or macOS.
  4. Use Time Machine to restore your user data from the Time Machine backup.
