How do I switch from ethernet to wifi backup

I've had one of the squat Time Capsule devices happily backing up my iMac (late 2012 version) using an ethernet cable for several years and recently used the backup from it to set up a MacBook Pro (2016 model)

I now want to do the following:

  1. Connect the Time Capsule via wifi to the MacBook using my existing (non Apple) router (same network)

or

2.  Replace the current wifi router with the Time Capsule (the current router is a BT Home Hub 4, so I'm not sure if the Time Capsule is ancient tech by comparison?)

I've tried following YouTube how to guides etc, but everything seems geared towards setting up a 'virgin' device and now one which already has backups present.

Any tips gratefully received!

First of all, you cannot replace the BT Home Hub 4 with a Time Capsule, because the Home Hub has a built in modem, which is required to connect to the BT service.....and the Time Capsule does not.

So, your only viable option would be to connect the Time Capsule to the BT Home Hub using a wired Ethernet cable connection and configure the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network. Then, connect your Mac to the wireless network provided by the Time Capsule. I cannot tell from the information in your post whether or not the Time Capsule might already be connected to your Home Hub using an Ethernet cable connection.

The Home Hub will still also be producing a wireless network signal, so you can use that for "guests", or the kids, or turn it off if you do not need another network.  The Home Hub support people would probably need to advise you on how to turn off the WiFi on the Hub if you decide that is what you want to do.

Your next question might be whether you could use the Home Hub wireless to back up to your Mac to the Time Capsule. This is not officially supported by Apple, and they will frown on this, but it still might work anyway if you want to give it a try.

Finally, a comment about your Time Capsule. If you really do have a 1st Generation Time Capsule.....(mentioned in your profile).....it is nothing short of a miracle that it will even power up at all. Frankly speaking, it should have failed 4-5 years ago.  The stress of resetting the Time Capsule and configuring it again with new settings to connect to the Home Hub may possibly push the Time Capsule over the edge, for which we cannot be responsible.

If you value the data on the Time Capsule drive, my recommendation would be to connect a USB drive that is formatted for Mac to the USB port on the Time Capsule and make a copy of all of the backup data on the Time Capsule.....before ......you consider doing anything else with the Time Capsule. That way, when the Time Capsule fails....which will likely be very soon.....you will still have your important data.
