Butterfly spacebar replacement?

I have a late 2016 13" MBP w/ touchbar that had been having on/off issues with the spacebar "sticking" - basically it wouldn't depress crisply like the other keys and required more force to register an input.  I tried blowing underneath the key to clear any debris that might be in there, but it usually didn't help.  Recently the key became somewhat loose and would only register an input if you hit it dead-center, making it all but impossible to type quickly.  I took the computer in to Apple, who tried replacing the key cap but could not resolve the issue.  It was then sent to a "central repair depot" where they determined the problem to be due to accidental damage and quoted a whopping $475 for the fix (presumably replacing the entire top of the laptop).

I am absolutely gutted by this news - we're talking about a 6-month old product that cost nearly $2000 here!  I have been a vocal advocate for Apple and have stood by its products for years, so needless to say this turn of events cuts deep.  Emotions aside, however, my question to the community is if anyone has had a similar issue and found a way to fix it short of replacing the entire top of the computer?  I'm a third-year vet student living entirely on student loans, so forking over nearly $500 to fix a single key is absolutely not in the cards for me.

Your coverage is based on equipment failing under normal use, but not "Accidental Damage", this is stated in the warranty.  Apple did not sell you a laptop that was broken; an accident or misuse was the cause of the problem. Very few warranties if any would cover this type of situation.

Despite your financial situation you can either continue to use the device as is or pay Apple to correct this. If you try to repair this yourself or use a non qualified repair service you could void any remaining warranty for hardware failures that occur from those repairs to be done by Apple in the future.

To you this may be a single key, to the repair tech it could be a new logic board or something far more involved.
