how to restore from backup

I have a backup drive that works on my Mac mini.  I don't remember what it's called or where to find it in the settings.  I deleted a file accidentally.  It's not in the Trash.  I would like to go to backup and find the file.  How do I get my deleted file back.  This is urgent.  Any help will be appreciated.
