How to open files from Appleworks with Keynote?

I have a 2008 MacBook.  When it was upgraded to OS X Yosemite, the Appleworks program I used was no longer used.  I cannot open any of our files I saved from a few years ago when I was teaching, but need the information now for former students.  How do I use Keynote to open those files under documents?   All I get is a small window that shows up which says: "Appleworks document is not a presentation.  Import Error."  I was told I could open previous files with the new update, but am not having any luck.  Thanks so much for your help with this situation!!
