IMAC 27" Retina display still under warranty

32 GB RAM

Mount the disk in Finder, then try running Disk Utility/First Aid on the drive.

tried Disk Utility

all that happens is the grey wheel goes round and round

won't mount or recognize the drive

I just force quit the drive

took  2. force quits

then reinserted the cable and its fine but this is happening too often

way too often

its not the disk its not the computer

its the OS X I'm afraid

I have no problems with my USB attached external drive, so I don't think it is the OS. Do you have enough space on your internal drive to copy the files to the internal so you can erase and reformat the drive. That might clear some of the errors.

will look into it

thanks

The disks register(s) are corrupted.

If you can see and mount the disk in DiskUtility: run FirstAid, several times if necessary.

If that is not possible, try it from the Recovery Partition Disk Utility.

If that does not work, you really need a bone breaker (I had this issue a week ago):

Testdisk  v7.1 did it, but it took 5 times before it was OK, step by step.

Then I could erase the disk, after that Partition/Erase....

read the full manual (pdf), because it is rather complicated.
