Mysterious "1" on System Preferences icon
I am helping my daughter set up her new refurbished MacBook. There is a red "1" over the System Preferences icon in the dock, but I cannot figure out what we haven't done. The OS is up to date: 10.12.6. When I click on the System Preferences icon, it goes straight to the iCloud settings, but there is nothing there that's telling me an update is needed.
Thank you.
It is probably the iCloud want you to upgrade to two-step verification. Open System Preferences and go to iCloud
and see if that is the case, you don't have to upgrade yet but you may want to in future.
Is she signed into iCloud? Does the App Store show any updates?

Yes, this was the correct answer. Thank you!
