Trouble installing macOS Sierra

I have downloaded macOS Sierra but cannot get to the install phase (after agreeing to the tems etc). I enter my password and the dialogue box disappears but nothing else happens. I have tried re-starting in safe mode as well as resetting the NVRAM. I currently have OS 10.8.5 and my laptop is capable of installing Sierra (mid 2012 macbook Pro). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
