Cannot disable Keychain in iCloud
Hi All!
I searched the Support Communities and found quite a number of threads dealing with the problem of (not-)disabling the Keychain in Cloud, however none of which is marked as „Solved“. I wonder why…
Has this problem gone on its own for most people or rather proved as unsolvable and was as such abandoned?
Whatever the case, here is my situation:
I have several Apple devices using iCloud (s. the list below) and with the single exception of my iPad Air 2 running iOS 10.3.3 I cannot turn off the Keychain in iCloud on any one of them…
Whatever I tried, Keychain keeps switching itself on again as if by (evil) magic! I do not use Auto fill in Safari on any of my devices, nor do I save passwords on any of my browsers (desktop or mobile), hence I do not use and do not want Keychain to be in iCloud at all - so why can’t I disable it there???
Many thanks in advance for all and any help!
PS: I want to be wrong, but I have a nasty suspicion this problem can somehow be corelated with this one -
—————————————————————
iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2013
iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 9.3.5
iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 10.3.3 ——->> The only device on which Keychain in iCloud is disabled!
iPhone 5s, iOS 10.3.3
iPhone 4S, iOS 9.3.5 (switched off 99% of the time)
Try booting the 2 computers into the Safe Mode to see if you can disable it.
Safe Mode - About El Capitan also Sierra
Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra
Thak you for your advice, Eric!
It's already a bit late today for this, but I will certainly do it tomorrow and report back to you - promised.
Many thanks again!
You are welcome. That is the only thing I can think of to try.
Late hour or not, I was so intrigued to repair this issue with Keychain that I went and tried to disable it in iCloud in safe mode on my younger iMac (iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2013) - unfortunately, no luck… It activated itself all on its own even before I finished typing my Apple ID in.
I will try it tomorrow on the older iMac as well but I am not very hopeful…
Long shot.
Might be a corrupt .plist.
Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.
Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
While trying to stop iCloud from persistenly asking for my Apple ID I already trashed "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" twice - no luck at all: iCloud still insists on my giving it the Apple ID after (almost) every boot-up and the Keychain keeps re-activating itself back again whatever I do.
Hmmm... Any other ideas per chance?
Thank you!
Hi Eric!
As promised, I followed your advice to uncheck Keychain in iCloud in Safe Mode on both of my iMacs - the Mid. 2011 and Late 2013 one.
Unfortunately, no luck on either of them… Unchecked Keychain in iCloud, typed in my Apple ID but even before I was done with the typing it has checked itself on again and stayed on - no matter how often I repeated the procedure.
Also, with the (so far unexplainable) exception of my iPad Air 2, Keychain keeps switching itself on again and again on all of my other mobile devices - iPad 2, iPhone 5S and iPhone 4S. Here too - no matter how often I repeat the procedure (incl. restarting the devices).
Any other ideas per chance?
Thank you!
