Clearing Hard Drive on iMac?

According to my hard drive, I have 454 GB of space devoted to Documents!  But that is impossible because I only have about 50 short letters saved on my iMac.  It says Photos uses only 58 GB and yet I have thousands of photographs on there.  I can't imagine what is taking up room on my drive because it doesn't specifically say what the documents are, so I can't delete them.  Could it maybe be backup files of documents?  Has anyone else had this problem?
