iPod Touch has gray bar at the bottom

So, I own an iPod Touch, well two in fact, but both in different generations. The question only applies to the older one, which is an iPod Touch 1st Generation.

It has 16 GB, iOS 3.1.3 and has been used since the day of purchase, which is not far from when it came out originally.

About a year or two ago, the grey bar suddenly appeared, at the very bottom of the LCD. It was accompanied by burnt marks above the grey bar that can only be seen when screen is off, otherwise it appears yellow when there is a white background. Since then, the grey bar slowly increased it's size. Surprisingly, when the device is cold or not processing much, the grey bar is smaller horizontally, and when at worst, it barely touches the sides of the screen

Anyone know why this is happening?
