When using the Smart Keyboard on a flat surface...
I recently purchased a 12.9" iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard case. When I use the iPad Pro on a flat surface with the keyboard open and connected, the weight of the iPad Pro lifts the keyboard off of the table unless my hands are on it. Is this normal behavior? Is there some sort of break-in period before it lays flat as depicted in the product photos on Apple.com?
Thanks in advance for any input anyone has—just trying to decide whether or not this is a defective unit or if the product just inherently has a quirk.
It appears to be an issue with a bad assembly, if you see the ones on internet, all of them have a little gap between the last flap of the keyboard and the followin one, at least on mine that gap os not present, causing the two flaps to overlap, and cause the ipad to have a bump when on a flat surface, this makes the weight of the ipad sufficient to lift the keyboard, and gives and awful feeling when attempting to type on it.
I Use my keyboard on all kinds of surfaces and have not seen this problem unless the surface is not a hard surface (i.e. A desk, table, etc...). To solve the problem I use the box my Apple Smart Keyboard came in with some shelf liner I bought at Lowe's Hadware, the kind that is sticky (although not to the touch of skin) to keep a hard surface under it while folded for use of the keyboard. Now, even if I am laying in bed like I am ATM or in the car, or anywhere, I am able to use my new iPad Pro and it's Smart Keyboard all the time. Be careful to not buy an off brand accessory, especially when something new comes out to avoid knock-offs problems with design and the end result to the purchaser.
It shouldn't be like that, especially for such an expensive product. I just bought the keyboard for the iPad Pro 9.7" and the keyboard lifting up is driving me crazy. I've looked at the keyboards in several Apple Stores and none of them had this problem. I can't seem to get any help from the Apple site so I'm going to return it to the Apple Store and see if they will replace it.
I had the same problem. I bent the keyboard (slowly and carefully!) in the opposite direction and this seems to have resolved the issue somewhat.
I think Apple tried to make the keyboard as light as possible. However a little more weight may have prevented this issue.
I literally just did the same thing and now it's working great! Thanks for being the test case (no pun intended) on this one!
I just put a pencil under the the non-keyboard part of the apparatus- voila, problem solved. It is due to the lightness of the unit - which I found to be as light as any non-keyboard cover I found!
A small compromise for a big benefit.

Yeah, this just worked for me too. You don't need to bend it a lot, but you do have to be firm with the little bit of distance you want it to stretch. Works perfectly now!
Mine does the same thing. If I bend it, it works great for awhile - but if I don't use it for a couple of days, it goes back to lifting up. My wife has a new one and it is perfect. Thinking of taking mine back.......
I had this problem on my iPad Pro 10.5” Smart Keyboard. Apple support is sending a replacement as it is within the 12 month warranty.
Hope this helps.
The replacement keyboard from Apple Support is good to go. Recommend anyone with this issue getting coverage from Apple.
I have exactly the same problem. Bought an iPad Pro 10.5 with pencil and Smart keyboard mid June.
I contacted Apple Support this morning, but man, what a disaster!
The guy treated me as if it was my fault that Apple sent me a faulty product and wasn't helpful at all. He wanted me to make an appointment in the Brussels store, drive to Brussels (over 1 hour drive) and then 'perhaps they will take it in for repair or replace it'.
I expected Apple to send me a new keyboard and I would then send back the faulty one.
I have been using a huge amount of Apple products over many years and gave them a lot of money. (started with the LC in the early 1990's). One would expect to be treated differently, given the high prices.
Ha Ha it totally works Thanks !!!
Finally went to the Apple Store in Brussels and they exchanged the keyboard immediately. Wonder why they couldn't do that at Apple Support. Had to spend several hours driving to Brussels and back.
Hey man, what was the outcome of your new case? Did it also pop up bad or does it lay flat nice? I bought a new one from Best Buy yesterday and it sticks half an inch off the table. Very annoying. I’m taking it back today but just wonder how it turned out for you.
