I cannot remove icons from the dock on my Mac r...

the drag and delete function on my dock is not working which leads to think that the dock is locked - how can I unlock it??

Are you sure you have dragged the icons high enough up? If you have an that doesn't work try relaunching the Dock,

Open Terminal and copy & paste this command:

killall Dock

Then Press Return.

Right click on the icon you want to remove, select Options on pop up menu Screen Shot 2017-08-20 at 13.36.02.pngthen 'remove from dock'.

Tried that and is doesn't work - cannot even drag them?

Delete the com.apple.dock.plist from your user Preferences, then run the killall Dock command previously suggested. The Dock will revert to defaults. See if you can regain control.

If not, try booting into Safe Mode and see if you can then manipulate the icons.

Restart normally and test again.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Also, try in another user account while booted normally.

I don't have that option

Try rebuilding the Dock.

In Terminal copy & paste this command

defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock

Press Return.

This will return your Dock to default and you will need to rebuild it the way you like.

I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
