I have to double click on messages to see body ...

One day, I was no longer able to see the body of my emails in the message pane below the email list. I have to double click on each email for it to show up in a different window.

 

I have already tried dragging the middle dot at center bottom of email list, but am unable to raise it even though it shows the arrow. It will not move. I can only go to the bottom corner and drag the window bigger or smaller which makes my email list longer or shorter but does not show the message window.

 

Please help!
