Macbook Pro Heat... (when playing minecraft)

Hi. I got a MBP, and the only pc game I play is Minecraft. I have been playing it, and I get about 45-65 or more FPS with normal/far render distance and fancy high graphics. It runs very well, and the fan makes no noise.

The top of my laptop (in between the function keys and the screen) gets pretty darn hot. Like, I can put my finger there for as long as I want, but it's definetly very warm. My Dad says that 'They are supposed to run hot' and I completely trust him, I just am slightly concerned and would like other opinions.

I tried downloading the widget iStat, but the website iSlayer.com is down so the download from Apple does not work. So, I have no idea how hot my laptop is running.

1. Is my Dad completely right? Is it supposed to run hot, but can that shorten it's lifespan?

2. Is there an alternative free widget I can get?

3. What is the best cooling device I should get that actually works?

4. AND: biggest question: Is Minecraft supposed to run hot.

Extra Info: I opened Activity Monitor while I was playing and it said that only like 1 percent of the system's CPU was being used and only about 13-22 percent of my user CPU.

You will be just fine.

Ciao.

1.  If you use CPU/GPU intensive applications, the MBP will heat up.  If that is all that you do with your MBP, the life span will be shortened.  Heat is the enemy to all electrical devices.  Its a question of degree.

2. Try Temperature Monitor.

3.  I don't use one, but a cooling pad would be good when you are stressing the CPU/GPU.  I have used Aluminum plates as an auxiliary heat sink when performing video work.  Poor mans cooler, but it works.

4. Yes. That is normal for computer games.

Ciao.

But if activity monitor says that I am only using about 1 percent of my system CPU, does that mean that it is not CPU intensive?

Minecraft is supposed to be a CPU intensive game, but for some reason, I'm reading extremely low CPU usage.

Install Temperature Monitor and see what it shows.  That will tell the tale.  Don't be surprised if the temperatures reach 90 c or higher.

Ciao,

Ok. Thanks. Going to get it now.

But, 90c or higher: is that Bad, or normal? lol

Its definitely better to get a heat sink if you want to continously play the game. Trust me heat for longer times periodically will definitely be very bad for your MBP

It will be normal.  But as I have said, heat in general is not good for electronic devices.  The MBP will run and operate as it is supposed to but if you keep pressing the limits of any electrical/mechanical device, it will fail sooner than if you did not.

The good news is that there are internal sensors in the MBP that will shut it down if the heat levels get too high.  The bad news is that Macs are not good gaming computers.  All computer game afficianados use PC's for this very reason.

Ciao.

Yes. I just don't consider myself a hardcore PC gamer. I play Minecraft, use Garageband, draw, learn java, and check my email. I just don't understand how that could shorten my computer's life span. But, I will get Temp. Monitor and see. Thanks!

PS: what is the best cooling pad? I did a quick google search and found just a ton that I have no idea what company they are...

Since I do not have any cooling pads, I cannot give you a definitive answer.  I would look for one that raises the MBP and forces air underneath it.  Perhaps some with experience will reply on that issue.

If you play mostly games that will be detrimental, but occasional use will be just fine.

Ciao.

By mostly games you mean....?

I play Minecraft about an hour a day.

I think its better to clear your start up or login items as I think they are actually making the temp rise while playing games....try to play just the game and disable all other apps...check this out in Activity Monitor or get the iStat widget as it'll easily point out which app is giving more load. And sorry if my reply of life shortening was a bit too harsh but heat of temp more than 85 centigrade for more than 25mins at a time does affect battery life immediately...you can check it out using various battery health and life apps in App store

You will be just fine.

Ciao.

Wait there is stuff running even if I haveno other apps open? I don't have anything else open when I play Minecraft.... I will check it out today, but now I am afraid... This whole heat thing is making me extremely paranoid.... hahaha

Here is a picture of Actibity monitor.  Only the items with icons are open applications.  The rest are backgroub processes that are reqired to run your MBP.  Relax!

Ciao.

Thanks...

It's really weird though... Whenever I play Minecraft, I check out activity monitor:

CPU:

% User: ~13-22%

% System: ~ 1.5-2%

% Idle: ~ 90-98%

Yet It still runs a little hot.

(yes I am still going to get Temp. Monitor just haven't yet... might put me at ease...)
