Missing discovery (flippy) triangles?

Ever since I installed Sierra (10.12.6) I've noticed something odd.

In addition to my internal 1TB drive, I have two USB hard drives attached to my 11,2 iMac; 1TB and 3TB.  The 3TB drive I use as my Time Machine backup drive and the other I use as an everyday storage drive.

The discovery/"flippy" triangles on the 3TB show up - but NOT on the 1TB where most of my files are stored in nested folders.

Occasionally... VERY occasionally, the discovery triangles pop up again on the 1TB drive, but then they go away.

Tried force rebuilding the Spotlight search database but that doesn't seem to cure it.

Anyone have any idea what's going on with the 2nd 1TB hard drive's triangles?
