Apple Watch wont update to WatchOS 4, says it...
So I’m running the Gold Master beta seed, and every time I check to see if Apple WatchOS 4 is available I don’t see it. It says I’m already up to date with WatchOS 3.2.3
Years of beta testing Apple software I can tell you one thing that has fixed a lot of problems, just cant explain why.
So this is how you fix it:
*Note, this might not be needed but can’t hurt. If the Watch app is running in the task manager, close the Watch app.
1. First remove the beta certificate and restart your phone.
2. While the phone is restarting it won’t hurt to restart your watch also with a hard restart, hold down the main button and crown at the same time.
3. Unlock you phone, go to > Settings > General > Reset > and select “Resset Network Settings”
4. Enter your phones password, and confirm network setting reset.
NOTE: This WILL reset all WiFi and Bluetooth stored passwords.
5. Enter your password once the phone is done the reset and rebooting. By this time your watch should also be back on.
6. Go to > Settings > General > Wi-Fi
7. If you run both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi then I recommend selecting your 2.4Ghz for this time. This will allow the Watch app and phone, and your cloud setting to store your 2.4Ghz WiFi password that will be needed for the watch to use 2.4 WiFi since nine of the apple watches can use 5Ghz (even Series 3, I’m disappointed Apple).
8. Enter the WiFi password for your 2.4Ghz wireless
9. Launch the Watch App on the phone.
10. Swipe up on the watch and confirm you are connected to the phone. You can also check the Bluetooth setting and should see the Watch connected in blutooth also.
11. On the Watch app, select > Settings > General > Software Update
If all goes well you should now see the WatchOS 4 for updating your watch. If the update just spins double check that the watch is connected to the phone. Mathe launch the weather in the Watch. Close the Watch app on the phone and try again.
This is the EXACT steps I took after assuming the original Apple Watch wasn’t going to get the WatchOS 4 update because it kept telling me I was up to date. After taking these steps it saw the update and I’m currently downloading WatchOS 4 while typing this up for other to benefit from.
other sites told me if I was running the iOS 11 beta seed I would have to remove the beta cert and wipe the phone, and restore it from backup. No, not again, I just did this a few days ago. So I found a different solution.
I didn’t share it with the other sites, I shared it on apples discussion site instead since that should be the first place people look for a answer.
Well, have to run. The update is preparing. I hope this helped.

If you have been using beta software, then to update to watchOS 4, follow the instructions here under the heading "If you installed an iOS or watchOS beta or developer seed":
Hi John,
Thanks for the reply. I did this, it didn’t work. Others are reporting on other sites it also was not be that easy and doesn’t work for everyone.
like I said, I don’t know why but over the years resetting the network settings in beta seeds have fixed a lot of issues mostly with Bluetooth in the past. Maybe this has something to do with the watch using blutooth?
If this had worked, if it was that easy I wouldn’t have spent the time to write this up.
I hope it does work for most, but hasn't for all of us. And mine was a fresh install, new phone when I decided to put the gold master on it and restore from a local iTunes encrypted backup to keep all the passwords. So this had nothing to do with previous betas of iOS 11, since I didn’t run any previous iOS 11 betas this year. Just the gold copy.
I stopped beta testing when it went public and I opened 26 bugs for iOS 7, or was it 8?
I spent the time documenting, writing them up, reporting them, and only 6 of them were fixed.
Then they asked me to confirm all these 26 bugs again after they released the final version. No thank you, to much work for free and I know I’m worth more then that.
So I dont write something up in this forum unless it’s valid to help others and more then the usual “Do this article” or “Reboot” level 1 support.
Thanks,
Scott
TIP: Do you want to make sure you Watch can work on the 2.4Ghz WiFi.
1. Wait for the watch to show connected.
2. Ask Siri on the Watch a question like “what time is it” and you should get an answer.
3. Turn off Bluetooth on your phone.
4. Now ask Siri a different question on the Watch like “show me my calendar” and it should still work.
5 Swipe up on the Watch, and it should still show connected.
Now you know the Watch is using blutooth and the WiFi correctly. You may want to try to turn off blutooth on the phone to make sure the update will work over WiFi.
The Older WatchOS used to default to blutoooh, and I would force it over to WiFi this way. The newer WatchOS 3 I think defaults to WiFi. So if the install fails to restart your watch then it might not be on the WiFi.
To out the watch in a dual band 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz router, see notes above.
Hey John,
Just for closure, I see your a level 10 and I admire and respect your help you contribute to the community.
I don’t want you you to misunderstand my comments in any way. Due to my health I don’t have the time to do this level of help for free these days. I barley make it through a day as it is, and why I’m up at 5am writing this now.
I saw you replied to another post I wrote while killing time fixing my issue. Dont wory, I’m not hear to try and compete or take your crown.
Cheers,
Scott
