Need to erase content on MacPro for resale

I'm giving my MacPro (2009 version) to a friend and want all personal data erased permanently.  Local techs have said they will 'destroy the hard drive'; anything less than that means the data is not erased and can be recovered.

My aim is to permanently wipe out all permanent data that is personal to me, but preserve the applications for my

friend's use.

In another part of this forum I read an expert say to delete me as a "User", introduce a new "Administrator" and that will do it.  This is contrary to what the local techs say.

Any solution?
