Using external SSD or USB Flash as bootable OS?

I have a 21.5" 4k iMac with a 1TB fusion drive.

Can I use a USB 3.0 or 3.1 flash drive as a continuously (permanently through the rear ports) connected boot drive? Or should I use and external SSD?

Click the links to look at the options I am considering in my price range:

Thanks for any advice!

You should use the external SSD, the quickest would be using Thunderbolt but USB 3 would be okay too. DO NOT buy a cheap enclosure. Get yourself an OWC Mercury Elite Pro with USB 3 or get quality Thunderbolt enclosure.

I'm still new to all this, and my money is thin since I just spent $2300 on the iMac. You seem to know a lot of info on this subject. Could you please explain more about some good options? You lost me when you said "get a good enclosure", lol. I was thinking one of the three that I put in the links would be sufficient.
