Mac can't verify 10.12.6 update

I tried updating my  iMac from macOS Sierra 10.12.5 to 10.12.6 using the App Store. I can see that the download of the update file finishes in App Store. I also get the prompt to restart. The machine restarts after approving it and it starts the update process. The update suddenly stops and shows an error message:

"macOS Sierra Update" could not be verified.
You can try updating again in the App Store after restarting.

Have you any suggests to fix it please?

I checked the date and time.  They are correct and set to automatically update.  Also downloaded the combo update and got the same verification failure.  I restarted in safe mode and tried again with the same results.  I also started in recovery mode and repaired the disk (it didn't find any errors) and still had the same results.  I downloaded another copy of the combo pack and tried all this again.

I am also getting "An error has occurred" messages in the app store when trying to download and install updates for keynotes, pages, wunderlist, etc.  It did update itunes without issue.
