iphone 6 contacts gone, icloud is also blank

Like others my iPhone 6 suddenly lost all contacts, I went to icloud as suggested but when I logged in to look at my contacts there, it's blank, and says it's not connected to a device, how can this be? I'm not having to put all my contacts back in...help!!
