Keychain and Excel Mac 2016

Since installing Excel for Mac 2016 (now 15.11.2 (150701) Excel always asks at launch to use confidential information stored in Microsoft ID in my keychain. It normally asks six times; very rarely only five times. Nothing ever changes between these repetitions.

I always Deny this - I have no interest in using Keychain, ever. Excel neither seems to mind nor gives any clue why it asked. It doesn't seem to be to look up my name, for instance, since the Author of a New File is never me but always Miscrosoft Office User, whether or not I Allow it access; anyway, half the point of a User name attached to a file is that it isn't confidential…

Neither Excel nor Keychain appears to have a preference that will turn this off.

Can anyone tell me how to stop it?

Best wishes,

Robbie

You can stop it by allowing access. How would it harm you to do that?

Well, Linc, should I laugh or cry?

Let's see:

1) Whatever Excel wants it fairly clearly has no need to ask even the odd five, let alone the usual six times. Why do you not think that indicates some kind of problem that probably doesn't need to be encouraged?

2) While it probably won't cause any problem, what stops you from personally indemnifying me against any harm it does do, particularly since Excel gave no clue what it wants, and 1) above and this is hardly more than a beta version…

3) I don't think Microsoft should be trying to dictate what's a good way for me to run my Mac, or even my MS application. Whatever Excel wants, it should have asked with some kind of detailed explanation, not this bland,  almost-reminder of something it rather gives the impression of assuming I would normally agree to. I might and again, see 1) above. All in all, this has already harmed my trust in Microsoft, whether it would yours or not.

4) Whether it be MS or Apple that designed the dialog box which offers only the three choices, "Always Allow", "Deny" and "Allow", it ought to have been clear that the fourth "Always deny" should have been included - never mind that worse than simply being a sloppily bad example to those who left school barely literate, "Always Allow" clearly indicates that the interface designer wasn't much better off, which does not encourage trustworthiness.

5) I don't think Apple should be trying to dictate, at that level, what's a good way for me to run my Mac. When I said before "I have no interest in using Keychain, ever" I meant the "ever" including this situation. Saying Yes or No to Keychain is very little less tedious than entering the passwords that would avoid; not regularly needing to use passwords causes too many Users to forget them, which can do harm; using Keychain gives an intruder a total of one password to crack - or none, if the machine was already running - which rather negates the point of any passwords in the first place.

Other than pretending there is no problem by surrendering to an intrusion I very clearly neither welcome nor have need of, does anyone have a useful suggestion for ending Excel's endless whining?

You can stop it by allowing access.

how i can do it??
if i push Allow - no reaction, still it asks me
if i push Always Allow - same, no reaction!
Only if i click 4 times DENY - it is gone!

Thank you!

Same to me, the buttons "allow" and "always allow" simply have no effect!

But it seem´s to be a keychain issue,

when starting keychain access and trying to give access for a specific object of the "login" keychain to all programs and try to save the change, the click on the "Allow" button as also no effect!

It seems there is a solution, though not an explanation.

The nuisance arose from Excel for Mac 2016 15.11.2 (150701) and it went after updating that to 15.17 (151206)

Even after speaking for about 40 minutes to MS tech, I have no faint idea what Excel was playing at, or why, nor why MS AutoUpdate didn't suggest that or anything in between… uh… automatically…

Happy New Year to you all!
